# When “they’re capable of doing it” isn’t the whole story.

Maybe your student is bright, curious, creative, or academically capable—but school still creates friction.

They may:

- Know what they need to do but struggle to get started
- Underestimate how long assignments will take
- Forget deadlines or lose track of materials
- Study hard without studying effectively
- Become overwhelmed when several assignments collide
- Rely on parents to keep school organized
- Feel increasingly stressed, frustrated, or burned out

These challenges aren't necessarily about motivation or intelligence. Students often need explicit systems for planning, time management, organization, studying, and follow-through.

## Meet Juliana

Born and raised in White Plains, New York, Juliana Bailey recently relocated to Decatur, Georgia, and is excited to join the Effective Students team. She is an experienced special educator, an academic coach, and instructional leader with more than a decade of experience supporting students with diverse learning needs across secondary and higher education settings. Her work centers on helping students develop the academic, organizational, and executive-function skills they need to become more confident and independent learners.

Juliana previously served as a Learning Specialist at Iona University in New Rochelle, NY, where she provided individualized executive-function coaching to college students with disabilities, focusing on skills such as time management, organization, study strategies, and self-advocacy. She also collaborated with faculty to help students access appropriate accommodations and successfully navigate the demands of college.

Prior to working in higher education, Juliana held leadership and instructional roles in special education, including serving as an Education Curriculum Coordinator and IEP Coordinator. Throughout her career, she has coached educators, developed differentiated curriculum, facilitated professional development, collaborated with families and multidisciplinary teams, and supported students with highly individualized academic and behavioral needs.

Juliana currently holds a Master of Education in Progressive Leadership from Bank Street College of Education, a Master of Science in Special Education and Learning Disabilities from Hunter College, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan.

Outside of education, Juliana grew up as a competitive figure skater and continues to share her passion for the sport through teaching figure skating. She believes strongly in the value of movement, creativity, and lifelong learning. In her free time, she enjoys practicing yoga, running, reading, and cooking.

## We don't hand students another planner and tell them to try harder.

Effective Students teaches students **how to learn, plan, and manage their work independently.**

Coaching combines instruction with immediate application to the student's actual schoolwork. Instead of imposing a one-size-fits-all system, the coach and student identify what's creating friction and build practical strategies around the student's real schedule, classes, assignments, and goals.

### Understand the Pattern

Identify where planning, organization, studying, or follow-through is breaking down.

### Build the System Together

Learn practical strategies that fit the student's needs and current workload.

### Practice Independence

That autonomy message is particularly important for this campaign: the Decatur research explicitly identifies “Autonomy over Compliance” as a core messaging pillar.

## Coaching for students across Decatur & East Atlanta

We work with families navigating demanding public, private, charter, and magnet-school environments throughout Decatur and the surrounding Intown Atlanta communities.

Whether the challenge is the transition into middle school, a heavier high-school workload, AP-level coursework, ADHD or executive-function challenges, or preparing for greater independence before college, coaching meets the student where they are.

Serving students in Decatur, Druid Hills, North Decatur, Inman Park, Virginia-Highland, Midtown and surrounding communities.

## The goal is a student who knows what to do next.

### Planning

seeing what's ahead before it becomes an emergency

### Time Management

understanding where their time actually goes

### Organization

creating systems they can maintain

### Study Skills

learning how to prepare effectively, not just longer

### Self-Advocacy

recognizing what they need and communicating it

### Independence

relying less on parents to manage school for them

## Let's understand what's getting in the way.

Start with a free 15-minute conversation about your student. We'll talk about what you're seeing, where the friction is happening, and whether Effective Students may be a good fit.
